ATLANTA (Oct. 6, 2020) - Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that TCU head football coach Gary Patterson has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week.
The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
The Horned Frogs went on the road in Austin and upset No. 9 Texas 33-31 thanks to quarterback Max Duggan's 310 yards of offense and a goal line stand by the TCU defense. Duggan ran for the go-ahead 26-yard touchdown with four minutes left in the game and the defense answered with a goal-line fumble recovery to give TCU its seventh victory over the Longhorns since 2012.
"Coach Patterson is no stranger to pulling off victories over top-10 teams, and Saturday's performance only adds to his impressive resume in Fort Worth," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "Coach Dodd would have admired TCU's full-team effort late in the fourth to pull off the upset victory against a rival on the road."
Since taking over the helm of the Horned Frogs in December 2000, Gary Patterson is now the nation's second-longest tenured head coach at his university. He is the Horned Frogs' all-time winningest coach with 173 victories, which are the most wins by an active head coach nationally at his current school. Patterson's .710 winning percentage (173-71) also ranks top five among active FBS coaches (minimum 10 years). With Saturday's win, Patterson now has 27 wins against ranked opponents during his TCU tenure, including 12 victories over top-10 teams. Patterson is also tied for second nationally among active FBS head coaches in most AP Top-10 finishes with six and he's second among active head coaches in most top-25 finishes with 11.
During his more than two decades in Fort Worth, Patterson has won 22 national coach of the year honors, including being named the 2009 Dodd Trophy winner.
Patterson's success on the gridiron is also mirrored in the classroom for his players. Last season, eight TCU football student-athletes received 2019 Academic All-Big 12 recognition and the team as a whole received an impressive Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 959.
Away from the football field, the Gary Patterson Foundation is dedicated to supporting youth organizations across the greater Fort Worth area. Its main focus is to support economically disadvantaged children by providing funding for programs and scholarships that focus on education, life skills, and health and family issues. In December 2018, The Gary Patterson Foundation donated $325,000 to 38 Fort Worth ISD elementary schools to upgrade the schools' libraries. Coach Patterson and his wife Kelsey were then awarded the 2019 Texas Library Association Benefactor Award for this effort.
"Coach Patterson is the epitome of what The Dodd Trophy is all about," said Gary Stokan, CEO and president of Peach Bowl, Inc. "His exceptional track record on the football field, along with his student-athlete's achievements in the classroom and his work in the community are exactly why he's one of the elite coaches to have won this prestigious award in the past."
The Dodd Trophy presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2020 season. The winner of the 2020 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during the week of this year's Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
