ATLANTA (Nov. 2, 2020) - Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that Texas head football coach Tom Herman has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week.
The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
The Texas Longhorns secured their first road win over a top-10 team since 2010 on Saturday with a 41-34 overtime victory against No. 6 Oklahoma State at Boone Pickens Stadium. Texas scored 18 points off of four Oklahoma State turnovers to pull off the upset. The Longhorn defense led the way behind linebacker Joseph Ossai's career day with a game-high 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble. He sealed the victory with a fourth-down sack of Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders to end the game in overtime.
Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger also made two crucial touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and overtime. His fourth-and-7 scoring toss to Jake Smith gave the Longhorns a fourth-quarter lead and a 15-yard scoring pass to Joshua Moore in overtime ended up being the game winner.
Saturday moved Texas' record to 9-9 against top-25 foes during Tom Herman's four seasons as head coach, which includes an 8-5 mark since the start of the 2018 season. In his six years as a head coach, Tom Herman is now 15-9 against top-25 opponents and 6-6 against top-10 teams.
"Coach Herman and the Longhorns defense pulled off a crucial win for the program against the highest-ranked and only undefeated team in the Big 12," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "Herman's ability to seemingly always have the Longhorns in contention during big games is something Coach Dodd would have admired."
Tom Herman was named the 30th head football coach at The University of Texas on Nov. 26, 2016. Herman has already made an immediate impact since arriving in Austin. His 25 wins during his first three seasons at Texas are the third-most in school history. Herman's 25-15 record entering this season was also a nine-win improvement on Texas' record from the three years prior to his arrival (16-21). That ranks as the second-best improvement by a Longhorn head coach during his first three seasons in charge. During his six-year career as a head coach, Herman has been one of the winningest coaches in the country. In that time, he has totaled 51 wins, the sixth-most by any active FBS head coach. Herman is also the only Texas head coach to go 3-0 in bowl games in his first three seasons.
Off of the football field, Herman has been instrumental in leading the Longhorns in the classroom, boasting an impressive Academic Progress Rate of 972. Under his leadership, the Texas football team also had 21 student-athletes earn a spot on the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 team. Sixteen Longhorns earned first-team honors, the most for Texas since 2009.
Herman has also been a prominent figure in Austin when it comes to giving back to the community. Herman and his wife, Michelle, have been heavily involved with several different charities around the city including the Boys & Girls Club of the Austin area, Front Steps homeless shelter, Meals on Wheels of Central Texas, Central Texas Food Bank, Safe Alliance and the Student Emergency Fund at the University of Texas.
"Coach Herman is the epitome of what this award stands for in terms of scholarship, leadership and integrity," said Gary Stokan, CEO and president of Peach Bowl, Inc. "He's finding success on the field, with his players in the classroom and is heavily involved throughout the Austin community with numerous different charitable organizations."
The Dodd Trophy presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2020 season. The winner of the 2020 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during the week of this year's Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
