Oregon’s Dan Lanning Named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week

Lanning receives honor after top-25 victory over No. 15 USC

ATLANTA (Nov. 24, 2025) - Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. today announced that Oregon head football coach Dan Lanning has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Presented by PNC Bank.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

Lanning earned this week's honor after leading No. 6 Oregon to a 42-27 victory over No. 15 USC on Saturday at Autzen Stadium. The win represented Oregon's third this season over a ranked opponent and now has the Ducks (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) in the thick of the hunt to host a first-round College Football Playoff game.

Oregon quarterback Dante Moore threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Noah Whittington added 104 rushing yards and a touchdown. Tight end Kenyon Sadiq had six catches for 72 yards and two scores and freshman Jordon Davison contributed an 11-yard rushing touchdown. Special teams and defense also made a game-changing impact, with Malik Benson returning a punt 85 yards for a touchdown, while the defense forced two interceptions on the day.

"Coach Lanning has built Oregon into one of the most resilient programs in the country, by balancing elite competition with character and discipline," said Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Chairman Jim Terry. "Winning against a ranked opponent in a high-stakes, top-25 conference game shows the leadership and standard he has instilled in his team."

Now in his fourth season at the helm, Lanning has guided Oregon to historic success, compiling a 45-7 overall record and posting double-digit wins in each of his first four seasons. He owns the most wins by any Oregon head coach though his first three seasons, and entered the 2025 season with the third-most wins among all FBS head coaches since 2022. Last year the Ducks captured the 2024 Big Ten Championship and reached the College Football Playoff under Lanning and are on track to make a return trip to the playoffs following Saturday's big win.

In the classroom, Lanning emphasizes academic excellence as a cornerstone of the program. Oregon football holds a 981 Academic Progress Rate and an 83 Graduation Success Rate, reflecting his commitment to developing student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.

In the community, Lanning fosters a culture of service and engagement. He was recently honored with the prestigious Stallings Award for humanitarianism, becoming the first Oregon coach to receive the recognition. Through programs like Ducks Do More, Lanning and his team have contributed thousands of volunteer hours, building beds and supporting children in need, while inspiring student-athletes to give back and make a meaningful impact throughout Eugene and beyond.

Lanning has also participated in the Southern Company Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament for the last two years, winning a total of $15,000 for the OHSU Foundation's Knight Cancer Institute.

"Coach Lanning has cultivated a culture of accountability, teamwork and relentless effort within the Oregon program," said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and president. "Saturday's win over No. 15 USC highlights Oregon's preparation, toughness and focus, while also underscoring why they are legitimate College Football Playoff contenders."

The Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, the award was established to honor the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1A) head football coach whose program represents the highest ideals on and off the field.

A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2025 season. The winner of the 2025 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
