David Shaw Named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week

Shaw receives award after leading Stanford to top-five win against Oregon in overtime

ATLANTA (Oct. 4, 2021) - Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. today announced that Stanford head football coach David Shaw has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week presented by PNC.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

The Stanford Cardinal secured a top-five win at home defeating No. 3 Oregon 31-24 in overtime. Sophomore quarterback Tanner McKee led the Cardinal on offense, completing 20-of-36 passes for 230 yards and three passing touchdowns. Wide receiver Elijah Higgins led the receiving efforts with six catches for 62 yards and the game-tying touchdown with no time left in regulation, while his counterpart John Humphreys caught the game-winner in overtime to go along with his 53 yards.

The Cardinal defense held the Ducks to just 186 yards passing, while also registering one interception, two sacks and six tackles for loss. Junior cornerback Nicolas Toomer led the efforts on defense with 10 total tackles, while junior linebacker Levani Damuni contributed nine total tackles to go along with his one sack and one and a half tackles for loss.

This was the program's third win over a top-5 Oregon team under Shaw and the first top-five win for a Shaw-lead Cardinal team since 2015. Overall, this victory gave Shaw his 17th win against top-15 teams since taking over as head coach in 2011. It also represented Stanford's fourth-straight win over AP top-three teams, which is the longest active streak in the FBS.

"This was a significant victory for Stanford that now puts the Cardinal in contention for a PAC-12 North Division title," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "Coach Dodd would have appreciated the way Coach Shaw kept his team focused in the fourth quarter to tie the game, and then pulled out the victory in overtime."

Shaw is now in his 11th season after being named the head coach at Stanford in 2011. During his time leading the Cardinal football program, he has become the winningest coach in Stanford school history with 93 victories overall, five bowl wins and three Pac-12 Championships. Shaw was the recipient of the 2017 Dodd Trophy and is the only four-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year in the conference's history.

Off the football field, Shaw has led the Cardinal to an impressive Academic Progress Rate of 990 in the classroom and a 90 percent graduation rate in 2020. Under his leadership, the Stanford program also recently had 33 players named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll for the 2020-2021 school year and four players selected to the 2020 Academic All-America Team.

Shaw has built a program that prides itself on giving back and serving the community. He was named to the Uplifting Athletes' Rare Disease Champion Team in 2020. Coach Shaw represents the Pac-12 on the AFCA Ethics Committee and in 2017 was one of 18 individuals named to USA Football's newly created Football Advisory Committee. Shaw has also been a constant supporter of the Set The Expectation pledge, aimed at working to end the culture of sexual assault and domestic violence among college and high school athletes.

"Shaw and the Cardinal constantly rank in the upper echelon of APR scores, GPA and graduation rates each year," said Gary Stokan, CEO and president of Peach Bowl, Inc. "His work in the classroom, along with his community involvement and continued success on the football field are all reasons he was named the recipient of the 2017 Dodd Trophy. He continues to embody everything that this award stands for, and we're looking forward to seeing him reach even more milestones on and off the football field in the years to come."

The Dodd Trophy presented by PNC - along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2021 season. The winner of the 2021 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during the week of this year's Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
