ATLANTA (Oct. 26, 2023) – The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation, PNC Bank and Peach Bowl, Inc. will celebrate legendary Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez's 30th anniversary of winning the national coaching award on Oct. 28 at Camp Randall Stadium during the Badgers' home football game against Ohio State.
The Dodd Trophy presented by PNC Bank is the most coveted Coach of the Year Award in college football and celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also representing programs with the highest ideals of scholarship, leadership and integrity on and off the field – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's philosophy.
Coach Alvarez was awarded The Dodd Trophy in his fourth season as head coach at Wisconsin, after leading the Badgers to a 10-1-1 record during the 1993 season. Alvarez and the Badgers went on to win a share of the Big Ten Conference title that year and eventually won the program's first-ever Rose Bowl with a victory over UCLA 21-16.
As Wisconsin's all-time winningest coach, Alvarez captured 119 wins, three Big Ten titles and 10 bowl berths during his remarkable 16-year tenure. He set a record for the highest all-time bowl winning percentage (.727) among coaches with at least 11 bowl appearances, and has since been inducted into the state of Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame and University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame.
"We are honored to travel up to Camp Randall and celebrate a legendary head coach like Barry Alvarez," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "His commitment to the University of Wisconsin Athletics for more than three decades is unmatched, so we are thrilled to be able to celebrate him and all his accomplishments this weekend in front of the Badger faithful."
"Coach Alvarez possesses an unparalleled devotion to the University of Wisconsin, it's football program and its student athletes," said Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and President Gary Stokan. "His leadership has impacted the lives of countless student-athletes that played under his guidance in Madison. Even 30 years later, he still embodies everything that this award is about."
Since 2014, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. have celebrated the major anniversaries of previous winners of The Dodd Trophy by honoring them during a game on their campus. Coaches such as Vince Dooley (Georgia), Bobby Bowden (Florida State), Bobby Ross (Georgia Tech), Dick Sheridan (NC State), George Welsh (Virginia), Dick MacPherson (Syracuse), Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech), Ralph Friedgen (Maryland), Bill Snyder (Kansas State), Lloyd Carr (Michigan), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Ken Hatfield (Air Force) and Tom Osborne (Nebraska) were all recognized at their respective schools.
The winner of the 2023 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank will be announced in Atlanta during bowl week of this year's Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
