ATLANTA (Nov. 6, 2023) - Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that Alabama head football coach Nick Saban has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Presented by PNC Bank.
The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
Saban led the Tide to a 42-28 victory over No. 14 LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Alabama was led by quarterback Jalen Milroe who threw for 219 yards through the air and rushed for 155 yards on the ground, to go along with a school record four rushing touchdowns. The Crimson Tide defense allowed only seven points in the second half, marking the seventh time this season that the Tide has allowed seven or fewer second half points. With the win, Saban has now surpassed former Georgia head coach Vince Dooley for the second-most victories at a single SEC school with 202 wins.
"Coach Saban has done exactly what coach Dodd did after a disappointing start to a season," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "He's improved that team in every phase of the game. Now with seven straight victories, Bama controls its fate in the SEC and is alive for a playoff spot."
Now in his 17th season in Tuscaloosa, Saban has compiled a 202-28 (.878) mark, and has led the Crimson Tide to an unprecedented eight SEC championships and six national championship titles. Along with many other awards, Saban was named the 2014 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year after a successful 12-2 record and SEC conference title. Saban previously spent time at LSU, Michigan State and Toledo as a collegiate head coach, as well as coaching stops at the professional level with the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and Houston Oilers.
Saban's players have had continuous success in the classroom during his tenure, recording a 995 Academic Progress Rate and an 89 Graduation Success Rate during the 2022 season. The Graduation Success Rate measures the number of student-athletes who graduate from their school within six years of entering.
In the community, the Saban family established the Nick's Kids Foundation in 1998 to promote and support children, family, teacher and student causes. Frequently hosting golf tournaments, luncheons and other events, Nick's Kids Foundation has distributed over $11 million to hundreds of deserving organizations and causes, including recent donations to career tech classrooms at the Tuscaloosa County Juvenile Detention Center and building 19 Habitat for Humanity homes. Nick's Kids is also a major donor of the Tuscaloosa All-Inclusive Playground, the Saban Center and the YMCA of Tuscaloosa.
"Coach Saban is one of the greatest coaches ever to coach the game of football at any level," said Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and President, Gary Stokan. "He strives for excellence on and off the field, teaching his student-athletes hard work and perseverance on the gridiron, in the classroom and in the community."
The Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2023 season. The winner of the 2023 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
