Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire Named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week

McGuire receives honor after top-10 victory over No. 7 BYU

ATLANTA (Nov. 10, 2025) - Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. today announced that Texas Tech head football coach Joey McGuire has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Presented by PNC Bank.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

McGuire earned this week's honor after guiding No. 8 Texas Tech to a 29-7 win over No. 7 BYU on Saturday afternoon in Lubbock. The victory marked the Red Raiders' first top-10 matchup since 2008 and handed the previously unbeaten Cougars their first loss of the season.

Texas Tech's defense delivered one of its most dominant performances of the year, holding BYU to a season-low 255 total yards and only seven points, the fewest against an AP top-10 opponent since 1955. The Red Raiders forced three turnovers and did not allow a score until the fourth quarter, marking the fifth time this season they have shut out an opponent through three quarters.

Kicker Stone Harrington led the way offensively, connecting on a school-record five field goals (47, 39, 34, 29 and 27 yards), while linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, the FBS leader in forced fumbles, sparked the defense with two takeaways, including an interception and a fumble recovery that both set up Harrington's kicks.

Quarterback Behren Morton threw for 216 yards and a 9-yard touchdown to Caleb Douglas, while running back Cameron Dickey added 121 rushing yards and a 1-yard score.
"Coach McGuire has turned the Texas Tech football program into both Big 12 and CFP contenders," said Chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation Jim Terry. "His leadership, energy and commitment to his players, both on and off the field, exemplifies the values of The Dodd Trophy."

Now in his fourth season, McGuire has turned the Red Raiders into a consistent postseason contender, including leading Texas Tech to three-straight bowl appearances and a 32-17 overall record. During his tenure in Lubbock, McGuire has posted at least five Big 12 victories in each of his first three seasons, making him the first coach in program history to accomplish that feat. His teams have earned bowl wins over Ole Miss and Cal, while also posting a 6-3 conference mark in 2024, the program's best since 2009.

In the classroom, McGuire has emphasized academic success and personal growth as key pillars of his program. Texas Tech football holds a 997 Academic Progress Rate and a 981 Graduation Success Rate, reflecting his commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.

In the community, McGuire has fostered a culture of service and connection that extends far beyond the field. Under his leadership, Texas Tech football continues to play an active role in the Lubbock and Red Raider community, supporting a wide range of outreach efforts through the university's Leadership Academy and Helper-Helper platform. Red Raider student-athletes, coaches and staff regularly participate in school visits, food bank drives, hospital visits and mentorship programs, contributing to more than 1,000 service hours annually. McGuire's emphasis on building authentic relationships and giving back has strengthened Texas Tech's bond with its community, reflecting his deep-rooted commitment to service, leadership and the people of his home state.

"Coach McGuire has instilled a culture of belief, toughness and unity in his program," said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and president. "Saturday's win over a top-10 opponent showcased just how far he's taken the Texas Tech program and why the Red Raiders are now in position to potentially make their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance."

The Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, the award was established to honor the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1A) head football coach whose program represents the highest ideals on and off the field.

A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2025 season. The winner of the 2025 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
