Dodd Trophy to Celebrate Bob Sutton’s 30th Anniversary of Winning Award

Sutton to be recognized during Army’s home game against Tulane

ATLANTA (Oct. 8, 2026) – The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. will celebrate former Army Head Coach Bob Sutton's 30th anniversary of winning the national coaching award on Oct. 10 at the Black Knight's home football game against Tulane. Representatives will honor Sutton during the second quarter with an on-field presentation at Michie Stadium.

In addition to celebrating Coach Sutton's anniversary of winning The Dodd Trophy, Saturday's game will also feature a halftime recognition of Army's 1985 team, which went on to win the Peach Bowl.

The Dodd Trophy is the most coveted national Coach of the Year award in college football and celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also representing programs with the highest ideals of scholarship, leadership and integrity on and off the field – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's philosophy.

Coach Sutton was awarded The Dodd Trophy in 1996 after he guided the Army squad to a 10–2 record, an appearance in the Independence Bowl and a top 25 finish in both major polls. Sutton led the Army football program from 1991-1999, winning five consecutive games against Navy from 1992-1996, along with the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy during the 1996 season.

"Coach Sutton set a new program record for wins during that historic 1996 season in West Point," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "It's an honor to celebrate Coach Sutton's 30th anniversary of winning The Dodd Trophy on Saturday in front of the Army faithful."

"Coach Sutton had a standout team and season in 1996," said Peach Bowl, Inc. President and CEO David Epps. "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to return to West Point and celebrate his accomplishments, especially during the same weekend Army commemorates its 1985 team that won the Peach Bowl."

Since 2014, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. have celebrated the major anniversaries of previous winners of The Dodd Trophy by honoring them during a game on their campus. Coaches such as Vince Dooley (Georgia), Bobby Bowden (Florida State), Bobby Ross (Georgia Tech), Dick Sheridan (NC State), George Welsh (Virginia), Dick MacPherson (Syracuse), Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech), Ralph Friedgen (Maryland), Bill Snyder (Kansas State), Lloyd Carr (Michigan), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Ken Hatfield (Air Force), Tom Osborne (Nebraska), Barry Alvarez (Wisconsin), Paul Johnson (Navy), Fred Goldsmith (Duke) and Kyle Whittingham (Utah) were all recognized at their respective schools.

The winner of the 2026 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during bowl week of this year's College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2026 season.
